Botox vs. Dysport

Botox is a very popular cosmetic injectable used to target lines and wrinkles of the face; however, along with Botox, there are also a variety of dermal fillers out there such as Dysport that can also help smooth away facial wrinkles. So, which one is right for you? Our renowned dermatologist and dermasurgeon Dr. James Ralston can certainly help you make this decision. Here are some helpful facts you should know about these popular anti-aging treatments.

Botox and Dysport Contain the Same Neurotoxin

Just as the name suggests, Botox is made from botulinum toxin A, a neurotoxin that is designed to temporarily block signals from the brain to the muscles to help them relax (this, in turn, smooths away certain lines and wrinkles of the face). Of course, people don’t realize that Dysport also contains a variation of botulinum toxin so they do work similarly in treating dynamic facial wrinkles (the wrinkles that are accentuated when you make expressions).

Want to Treat Crow’s Feet? Dysport Might Be the Winner

Dysport may be better at treating crow’s feet than Botox as one study found that approximately 60 percent of the participants preferred the results from Dysport over Botox despite not knowing which treatment they had received. If you want to get rid of wrinkles around your eyes then talk with our cosmetic dermatologist about whether Dysport may be the better option.

Botox is Most Often Requested

While there is a wide range of cosmetic fillers out there, Botox still remains the most commonly used muscle-relaxing treatment for reducing the appearance of moderate-to-severe lines and wrinkles. Of course, both Dysport and Botox are FDA approved for treating forehead lines, laugh lines, and lines between the eyebrows.

Results are Faster with Dysport

Most patients will see their results within 2 days with Dysport while it can take up to five days to see results with Botox. If you are looking to get results quickly before a big event or important meeting this could also determine which treatment is better suited for you. Results are temporary for both treatments, usually lasting anywhere from 3-6 months before needing a refresh.
