Understanding Patient Physique With STyku

At the Dermatology Center of McKinney, the team takes full advantage of the latest body scanning technology available. Our Styku body scanner is a top-of-the-line 3D imaging device designed to accurately measure waist, hip, thigh and more with less than a 1% margin for error.

Digital Body-Awareness

Advanced Sensors

The Styku S100 scanner uses an infrared Kinect One sensor to assess patients’ bodies.

The device beams particles of light in front of the device that bounce back to the device itself. The time it takes for the light to return is known as the “time of flight”. Think echolocation bats use to understand their environment. Imagine this process repeating over and over again to create a composite image of the person in front of it. What’s left is a detailed 3D outline of the scanned individual.

Styku Scan Checklist

Dr. Ralston guides each patient through the following steps to ensure a successful scan.

Step #1 Tie your hair up in a bun so it doesn’t hang below the shoulders. Our providers will have hair clips, bands, and pins available for all of our patients. Hair below the shoulders may be picked up by the device’s infrared scanner causing incorrect measurements.

Step #2 Wear form-fitting clothing. Because the Styku captures millions of data points about your body all while you stand still, body-conforming clothing give the machine the most accurate information to work with.

Step #3 Stand on the raised tower. Place your feet within the beveled outlines, and face the sensor tower.

Step #4 Raise your arms level with your shoulder, resembling a “T” pose. This allows the device to measure the fat under your arms.

Step #5 Then, your provider will ask you to lower your arms down until they are about 8 inches above your waist. This pose resembles the letter “A”. Patients will see a live scan of their body with a green overlay where their arms should be.

Step #6 Once your arms are positioned correctly, stand completely still. The raised tower you stepped up on earlier will begin to rotate slowly. Breathe normally and allow the device to capture your body with precision.

Styku Fitness

Styku can use measurements such as body fat to help plan future workouts and healthy dieting.

  • This tab’s first page showcases the patient’s percentage of body fat compared to the rest of their body. If they’ve had previous scans done, a bar graph illustrates their body fat percentage over time.
  • The next tab, the fat loss calculator, helps patients understand the work required to achieve their desired body fat percentage. The system does the math for you. Simply use the first slider to set your desired percentage and the second to set a workout intensity level for each week. Using the Harris-Benedict equation, the system tells you how long it will take to reach your goal.
  • The next page in the fitness tab gives users an estimate of how many calories patients should consume each day to achieve their desired body fat percentage.
