Is It Eczema or Psoriasis?
Both psoriasis and eczema are relatively common conditions, with eczema affecting roughly 32 million people and psoriasis impacting 7.2 million people. Both immune-system related diseases result in itchy, red, and dry skin. The experts at the Dermatology Center of McKinney are quick to spot telltale signs for each condition.
Psoriasis often appears on the scalp, elbows, knees, buttocks and face. With psoriasis, the immune system is overactive in a manner that leads to the growth of too many new skin cells. When cells pile up on the skin, they appear as scaly patches of thicker, raised, and more inflamed tissue.
Eczema may appear in many of the same places as psoriasis, but is most common on the back of the knees and inside of an elbow’s inner crook. No one fully understands the causes of eczema yet, but a combination of genes, stress-induced factors, and immune system tendencies are believed to play a part.
Our Approach to Treatment
Before patients receive psoriasis and eczema treatment in McKinney, they’ll meet with one of the practice’s experts in skin health, Dr. Ralston or Madison Gilmore. This conversation will include a discussion about the patient’s medical history and the patient’s health goals. Our providers will help them determine if their red, itchy, and raised skin will require eczema or psoriasis treatment or, in rare cases, both.
