Surgical Dermatology Methods

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) uses special agents called photosensitizing agents, along with light, to kill precancerous cells. The drug only activates by certain wavelengths.

Cryosurgery is a particular kind of surgical dermatology where providers use liquid nitrogen to remove skin growths from the body.

Electrodesiccation and curettage (ED&C) is a treatment where the doctor uses an electric probe to destroy skin growths with heat.

Mohs micrographic surgery, developed in the 1930s by Dr. Frederic Mohs, offers the highest cure rate in the treatment of basal and squamous cell cancers.

Superficial radiation therapy (SRT), combines low-energy x-rays and heightened precision to eliminate cancerous skin cells that appear on the skin.

Providers perform surgical excision to remove cancerous tissues from the body using a scalpel, laser, or another cutting instrument.

Our Approach to Treatment

Our surgical dermatologist in McKinney, Dr. Ralston, helps patients remove basal and squamous skin cancer cells. Serious melanoma may require chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy, among other treatments.

Preparing for Surgery

After Dr. Ralston determines what treatment(s) will produce the most successful outcomes for his patient, he provides explicit instructions on how to prepare. He recommends doing the following to ensure a seamless procedure:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes to allow the provider ease of access to the treatment area.
  • Arrive on time, and update the provider on any changes to your health that may have happened since your consultation.
  • Shave and cleanse the treatment area, taking special care not to irritate the skin.

Post-Treatment Care

After the patient’s surgical dermatology treatment, Dr. Ralston ensures his patients have a smooth and quick recovery. He recommends these steps:

  • Limit movement for 2 to 3 days post-surgery.
  • Keep the gauze or dressing dry and in place for 2 days before changing.
  • Keep the treated area elevated if possible.
  • Apply an ice pack for 10 to 20 minutes each hour.

Before changing your bandage, please wash your hands, then:

  • Apply hydrogen peroxide and soapy water, gently, with a Q-tip to remove crusts.
  • Dry the wound by blotting with a cotton ball.
  • Apply a healing balm or ointment with a Q-tip.
  • Cover the excision wound with dressing.
  • Wrap a new bandage around the wound.
