Clinical Consultations

Every treatment plan in our practice starts with an in-person or live-video telehealth consultation with one of our specialists. During this private conversation, we’ll discuss your daily habits and look deeper into your medical history to determine the root causes and type of your acne. This clinical, yet personal, approach goes beyond what your average skincare aisle can provide!

As our team determines your skin type and texture, we consider different treatment modalities that could give you a clearer complexion. We not only offer the latest and safest medical treatment modalities, but we also offer one of the widest arrays of specialized devices for the most effective acne treatment in McKinney for every patient’s unique needs.

Advanced Treatment Options

With years of practice, we utilize the most advanced laser and light therapies to treat your affected skin. This provides deep relief from the epidermis to the uppermost layers of the dermis to ensure complete relief. Depending on your skin’s unique needs, we may include one of the following options for your clinical acne treatment.

AviClear

AviClear is a laser that is FDA-cleared for the treatment of mild, moderate, and even severe acne. When fighting concerns like redness or overproduction of sebum (oil), this device uses a highly specialized laser to comfortably relieve your deepest acne concerns. The specific process of the laser makes it effective for almost every type and texture of skin we see.

How It Works

AviClear uses a specific 1726 nm wavelength laser to precisely target and minimize the overproduction of sebum from the sebaceous glands. As it vaporizes excess oil, this laser incorporates a cooling system (AviCool™) to ensure complete comfort. By reducing sebum production, AviClear eliminates existing acne flare-ups and temporarily prevents pimples from forming in the future.

This is one of the most effective acne treatments in McKinney, with only three 45-minute sessions spread every four weeks. We also include clinical-grade at-home skincare in between treatments for further maintenance. To provide the most flexible treatment plans possible, these additional options are shedding new light on acne prevention.

Agnes RF Microneedling

Agnes RF is an innovative radiofrequency microneedling device that offers a targeted solution for persistent and cystic acne. This technology uses a precision microneedle to deliver radiofrequency energy directly into the sebaceous glands responsible for recurrent breakouts. By selectively destroying overactive glands, Agnes RF can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of acne lesions, particularly in patients who have not responded to conventional therapies. The treatment is minimally invasive, requires little downtime, and is suitable for all skin types. Many patients notice a marked improvement in both active acne and oiliness after just one to two sessions, making Agnes RF a valuable addition to our comprehensive acne treatment options in McKinney.

Blue Light Therapy

In most cases, we find that acne is closely associated with the bacteria Cutibacterium acnes. These bacteria naturally produce light-sensitive compounds called porphyrins to spread. When treated with blue light, these porphyrins overload and die within seconds. This effectively kills the bacteria that lead to breakouts.

How it Works

Our blue light acne treatment in McKinney uses specialized light in the 405 to 420 nm wavelength range to penetrate deep into the epidermis. As it absorbs the blue light, your porphyrins become “excited” enough to trigger a chemical reaction that leads to reactive oxygen species (ROS). These highly reactive oxygen species lead to the destruction and death of the bacteria. By reducing the population of C. acnes, blue light therapy works to prevent new breakouts and reduce existing ones.

This is one of the fastest and most comfortable acne treatments we offer. Typical sessions last between 15 to 20 minutes, and provide lasting relief with regular follow-ups every 1 to 2 months. The flexibility of this treatment makes it a perfect pairing alongside our other clinical acne treatments in McKinney.

IPL Therapy

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a noninvasive, highly effective therapy that focuses on eliminating the root causes of acne. Unlike other light therapies, this device uses a broad spectrum of wavelengths for noticeable results. IPL therapy is one of the most versatile acne treatments we offer due to its unique process.

How it Works

IPL helps to regulate and reduce excessive oil production., IPL’s broad spectrum of light targets hemoglobin in blood vessels and reduces redness and inflammation associated with active acne.

To target acne, IPL uses light that destroys the bacteria that contribute to acne breakouts. The effects of a full 30 to 45 minute treatment provide relief from inflamed and swollen cysts or lesions.

What to Expect

At the Dermatology Center of McKinney, patients get access to advanced treatments and seasoned professionals who know how to address their unique needs. Following your consultation, we’ll schedule your initial treatment sessions. Each device comes with pre- and post-operative care that your specialist will cover before your treatment.

Here is an overview of what you can expect throughout your acne treatment in McKinney.

Pre-Care

All facial treatments we offer require patients to arrive fresh-faced without any makeup or lotions. To get ready for your visit, just wash your face, make sure your hair is out of your face, and wear comfortable clothing. When you arrive, our front desk staff will greet you and have you fill out any remaining paperwork. Once your treatment room is prepared, a specialist will escort you back for the first session of one of the following treatments.

AviClear

Upon arrival, you will comfortably recline in a treatment chair. Before we begin your procedure, we’ll address any last-minute questions. We start with a thorough cleansing of the treatment area to remove any residual makeup, oil, or impurities, ensuring optimal laser efficacy. Protective eyewear will also be provided to shield your eyes from laser light exposure.

As the handheld device moves across your skin, you may experience a sensation often described as a mild warmth or a light snapping, similar to a small rubber band against the skin. Most patients find this sensation highly tolerable, eliminating the need for numbing creams or pain medication. While the device delivers heat to the dermis, your skin’s surface remains protected by AviCool™. The entire treatment is just as comfortable as it is efficient and typically concludes within 30 minutes.

Post-Treatment Care and Follow-Up

Following the treatment, a clinical-grade moisturizer containing broad-spectrum sunscreen will be applied to promote healthy healing and soothe the skin. Some patients may report mild redness or slight swelling immediately after, which generally subsides within a few hours to one day. Before your departure, we’ll schedule your next appointment, typically at least three weeks out, to allow adequate time for your skin to adjust.

A typical initial series consists of 3 treatments. Similar to our other acne treatments in McKinney, this procedure requires no downtime or painful recovery.

Agnes RF

During your Agnes RF treatment, you’ll recline comfortably while the targeted areas are cleansed and prepped. A topical anesthetic is applied to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Using a specialized microneedle, the device delivers radiofrequency energy directly into selected oil glands. Most patients describe the sensation as mild warmth or a slight prickling, with minimal discomfort due to the numbing cream. The session typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated. Afterward, you may experience mild redness, swelling, or pinpoint scabbing, which usually resolves within a few days. There is little to no downtime, and you can return to most daily activities immediately. Noticeable improvement in acne and oiliness is often seen within a few weeks, with optimal results after one to two sessions.

Blue Light Therapy

During a blue light session, you’ll comfortably recline in our treatment chair. There, we’ll cleanse your skin thoroughly and provide protective eyewear to shield your eyes from bright light. We’ll then position the blue light device over the affected areas of your skin.

Throughout the session, you’ll experience a gentle, warming sensation. Each session lasts between 15 to 20 minutes, making it a quick, effective, and convenient treatment. We recommend regular blue light sessions depending on your schedule and needs. You can enjoy blue light therapy almost every day if you’d like, but most patients book 1 to 2 sessions every season just to stay on top of their acne after initial treatments.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

This treatment is just as comfortable as our other light-based acne treatments in McKinney. We start by cleansing the treatment area (face, neck, chest, or hands). Then, we apply a cooling gel to ensure complete comfort and effective light penetration.

During your treatment, the effects of the IPL handpiece may feel like mild “snapping” and warming sensations; however, the integrated cooling system keeps skin comfortable throughout your session. The entire process takes between 20 and 45 minutes and requires no downtime.

Afterward, we remove the gel and apply a moisturizing sunscreen.

Post-Care

You can expect redness, minor swelling, and pigmented lesions that darken and flake off in 1 to 2 weeks. This is a sign that your treatment was successful. In the weeks following your session, you should avoid direct sun exposure and use gentle skincare. Most plans include between 3 to 6 initial sessions, 3 to 4 weeks apart, as discussed in your initial consultation.
